ATTRACTIONS
Nature and History Galore!
Wineries, museums, and unique attractions complement Perry
County’s natural beauty and historic charm. Two wineries offer
the visitor educational tours and wine tastings along with
shopping and relaxing in wine gardens that offer breathtaking
views of the hills and the river. Vineyards can be seen
dotting the countryside. Winzerwald Winery along Interstate 64
celebrates the German and Swiss heritage of the area and its
owners by offering unique German and Swiss-style wines, gifts
and festivals that celebrate this award winning winery. Blue
Heron Vineyards will open in 2003 at Rocky Point with a
tasting room in historic Cannelton. The winery celebrates the
beauty of the Ohio River with views of the river from the deck
of the winery and an array of items made by local artists.
Pair your wines with locally made snack foods. The Tell City
Pretzel Company offers hand twisted hard pretzels from a
recipe originally brought here from Switzerland in the
mid-1800’s in a small location on Main Street in Tell City.
Move eastward on Washington Street to our local Werner Drug
Store for soft fresh fudges in a variety of flavors…stop by
for a free sample. Travel further east on Washington Street
you’ll find the Bettinger Potato Chip factory, a one-room
facility that also has been frying up popular local curly
potato chips since 1917.
Also on Highway 62 near Winzerwald Winery you can find two
other natural attractions—Bear Hollow Wood Carvers and the
Mary Rose Herb Farm and Retreat. Bear Hollow is an outgrowth
of Phil Etienne’s Timber Harvest, where sustainable forestry
is practiced. All chain saw carvings and wood furniture are
crafted on-site by local wood carvers with locally harvested
trees. The Mary Rose Herb Farm offers overnight stays in a
yurt (a circular raised tent like structure), herbs & gifts,
Chinese medicine consultations, classes and workshops, and a
relaxing country retreat for a luncheon meeting or overnight
stay.
Three museums in the county showcase the rich history of the
area. The new Perry County Courthouse Museum in the olde
courthouse on Highway 66 in Cannelton conjures up many
memories with its antique pianos and organs, crockery,
photograph collection, blacksmith shop, original log homes,
and annual quilt display. Also visit the Tell City Historical
Society on Franklin Street near downtown Tell City in the olde
Carnegie library and the rustic Troesch Steam Engine & Antique
Museum in Adyeville.
Two state parks, four caves & caverns, an amusement and water
park, the National Abraham Lincoln Boyhood Memorial and
Outdoor Amphitheatre with two musicals each summer season, a
ski resort, a performing arts center and one of only seven
archabbeys in the world and much more are all within a 30 to
60 minute drive.
